Two arrested after robbery, shoot-out at Springsgate Shopping Centre

The two suspects were both from New Valley in Yeoville, Johannesburg.

Two suspects were shot and injured in a shoot-out with an off-duty security guard during a robbery at Ackermans at the Springsgate Shopping Centre on Thursday.
Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora explained two gunmen entered the store and while one of them guarded the entrance, the other approached a staff member and demanded cellphones.
The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cellphones from the store’s safe and stashed them in a blue backpack.
In addition to the cellphones, R1 000 was taken from an employee’s handbag.

An off-duty security guard walked into the store while the robbery was in progress.

The suspects pointed their firearms at him.
The guard responded by pulling out his firearm and firing towards the men, injuring both of them.
The suspects then fled the scene.
The first suspect was arrested in Connaught Avenue in Geduld Extension, with two bullet wounds to his left upperarm and for being in possession of a 9mm pistol.

The other suspect hijacked the driver of a black Volkswagen Polo in the parking lot of the shopping centre but didn’t get far and was later arrested by the EMPD in Hospital Road, Brakpan North.
Inside the hijacked vehicle, a blue backpack containing cellphones and a revolver were found.
This man was admitted to the Far East Rand Hospital with four bullet wounds.
Both men are from New Valley in Yeoville, Johannesburg.
