Speed humps installed as a temporary fix on Grootvaly Road

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has installed speed humps on Grootvaly Road in an attempt to curb the number of accidents.

Over the past few months, several cars have overturned on the road reportedly due to sewage spills.

Last Tuesday, during a site visit by officials from the CoE, it was confirmed that water is crossing Grootvaly Road at the bend in the road.

“It must, however, be noted that the water is crossing the road in a sheet not wider than 500mm and the water does not result in the road being slippery,” said CoE spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

“In all honesty, if the sheet of water freezes as reported by the Springs Advertiser, it cannot on its own contribute to the accidents near the bend along Grootvaly Road.

“The speed at which reckless motorists drive is a major contributing factor.

“If one loses control of a vehicle and hits a wall approximately 100m from the bend, this can mostly be attributed to speed.

“The water emanates from an upstream area and while solutions are being developed to permanently solve the overflow of the drainage systems into Grootvaly Road, temporary speed humps were installed.

“It must be emphasised that the humps will be removed once the solution to the drainage problem is implemented.”

Ward councillor Dean Stone visited the site on Thursday and found the road department had erected two new signs, one reading ‘high accident zone’ and the other ‘slow down’.

“We want to say a special thank you to Dewald Greyling and the road department for their help, but this is just a temporary solution and we need to get the water department involved to address the larger problem, which is the sewage,” said Stone.
