• Hit man hired to kill woman

A well-known businessman Johannes Lodewikus appeared in the magistrate’s court with three other men in connection with his wife’s murder.It is alleged that a man was hired by Lodewikus to kill his wife.Sonja van Heerden was shot in the head at close range on their plot on December 22, 1990.The man was paid R4 000 to kill the woman.The case was postponed to August 5 when the men are expected to plea in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court.

• Harvard planes upgraded

Massive cockpit upgrades were done on Harvard aircrafts. These aircraft are widely used by the Central Flying School, one of which is located in Dunnottar,The project, labelled Project Ice Cream, involved a massive restructuring of the aircraft’s electrical and mechanical components.The Harvards will be flown to Pretoria where they will undergo the upgrades.

• Husband and wife team up to fight crime

Serina and Anton Snyders are both sergeants at the Delmas CID, and say that fighting crime together has made their marriage stronger.The couple met at the Police College in Pretoria and joined the Parys branch in 1976, and got married shortly after.They were promoted to the rank of constable at the same time and were moved to the Springs branch in 1984.The couple said the fact that they do the same job allows them to accommodate each other in a special way.They also know each others movements and the details of their duties.”The future in the police as policemen, together is a challenge in itself,” the couple agreed.

• Lions runs Youth Exchange

The Lions Club of Springs offered young people the opportunity to take part in their Youth Exchange Programme.Participants will have a choice of a number of locations in Europe, the USA and Zimbabwe in mid-December for four to five weeks.The purpose of the programme is to foster a sense of “Lionism” in young people which is to, “create and foster a spirit of understanding amongst the people of the world.”
