Delving into the past

These were some of the stories making headlines in 2000

This week we look back at the Advertiser of September 1, 2000:

• Slovo Park residents demolish man’s house

Selcourt resident Manuel Rodrigues had his house stolen, literally brick by brick, by neighbouring residents in Slovo Park.

Residents were seen pushing wheelbarrows full of bricks from Rodrigues’ house.

Rodrigues had considered selling his farm in the past, but now regrets turning down the many offers that were made to him as he no longer feels safe on his farm.

Other structures such as doors and window frames were also carried away.

No arrests were made but an investigation was made by the police.

• Springs athlete has Olympic dreams shattered

Local athletic sensation Furita Febbraio was on her way to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, to compete in the 400m hurdles.

Febbraio qualified for the provincial team and was looking set to make Springs proud.

Unfortunately, Febbraio was excluded from the final team as she did not attend the ASA tour of Europe in August.

The athlete says she was unaware that this was a requirement to be made part of the team.

Febbraio was on top of her game and fitter than ever before, as she had recently beaten her best personal time of 55.2 seconds at the international test against Australia, placing her 18th fastest in the world.

Febbraio stressed that the South African Olympic team needs more women, and that the current team does not reflect the talent the country has to offer.

• Teenagers put lives at risk to rescue mom and daughter

A mother (43) and her 11-year-old daughter were attacked by the mother’s knife wielding ex-husband.

The two tried to hide from the man but were unable to do so and both suffered stab wounds.

Three teenagers, two boys and a girl, forced their way into the home upon hearing the screams of the mother and child.

The man tried to attack the teenagers, but they were able to subdue him and quickly called the police.

The teenagers had struck him over the head with a bedside table to subdue him.

•Brothers threatened with broken bottle

Two siblings, Arno de Klerk (14) and his brother Werner (10), were out fishing in Eastvale when they were approached by a man seeking directions.

The brothers gave him the directions and he left.

As the brothers were leaving, however, the man returned wielding a broken bottle.

He stole their mountain bike and rode away into the veld.
