Getaway driver arrested after robbery of clothing store

One in cuffs after robbery at 5th Avenue clothing store

A man suspected to be the getaway driver for a gang of robbers was arrested following the robbery of a clothing store in The Avenues Shopping Centre.

The store was robbed by four men wearing face masks on Tuesday morning.

According to Springs police, the robbers entered the store and pretended to be customers.

They were wandering around the shop looking at the goods on sale when three of the men suddenly pulled out handguns and pointed them at employees and customers.

The robbers fled with a bag of cellphones and R3 209 in cash from the till, and ran towards 5th Avenue where they disappeared into the parking area.

A fifth man, believed to be the getaway driver, was waiting in a red VW Golf 1 on 5th Avenue, but was spotted by security guards who gave chase after he drove away.

The vehicle was stopped by EMPD officers on the corner of Second Street and First Avenue and the driver was arrested.

No shots were fired during the robbery and no injuries were reported.
