Water going to waste at Markville flats

Water leakages a frustration for residents at Markville flats

Residents at Markville flats are left with leaking pipes, and are frustrated with the metro’s lack of answers.

A broken water pipe, which has been leaking since May last year, has water running continuously into Gerty Connor’s sink.

Connor says every time she has gone to the metro with the issue she is put on a waiting list.

Johan Enslin, a resident at Markville, says the problem is something that can easily be fixed, but they are told they are not allowed to work on the plumbing.

Piet Botha has water pouring into his bathtub at a rapid rate from a broken pipe.

This problem started last year and Botha estimates that 3 000 litres of water is wasted every week as a result of this.

Botha is also placed on a waiting list when asking for the problem to be fixed.

Connor and Botha are concerned about how much water is being wasted.

“You read all the time about water shortages in this country, but yet they allow things like this to carry on,” says Connor.

Geyser problems also continue to plague Markville.

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, has to bathe in another flat as the geyser in his has been broken since the beginning of the year.

As a result, he now has to pay the electric bills of both flats.
