Markville residents still without a lift

After many years, there is still no ligf for Markville

Residents at Markville Flats have gone without an elevator for five years now.

Elderly residents live here and traversing the many flights of stairs poses a major physical health hazard to them.

The lockdown has only exacerbated this problem.

Most of the residents living on the top floors cannot go out shopping for groceries and have had groceries delivered to them via a rope.

Metro responds to Markville Flats lift issue

Last year, residents were told that a tender was sent out and that they could expect a functional lift to be installed this year or 2021 at the latest.

Ward Clr Dean Stone says a tender was sent out earlier this year by the Housing Department to fix the lifts in many flats, not just Markville.

The problem with this is that the designs and specs of the lifts vary from place to place, and purchasing one model for all of them will not solve the problem.

Stone says: “This is sheer negligence and incompetence, and we cannot just let these people live like this.”The residents here are fed up.

“It is inhumane and seems that the metro just does not care about these people at all.”

The metro have failed to respond to our inquiries at time of publication.
