Foreign national spaza shop owners lend a helping hand to locals

“We will only beat this Covid-19 if we stand together,” adds Iyasu Belayneh.

The national lockdown has shined the light on the extreme poverty that so many people live under in our community.

A group of foreign national spaza shop owners from Kwa-Thema stepped out to lend a helping hand by handing out food parcels.

“We are doing business here (in Kwa-Thema) and the community is supporting us.

“Now it is our turn to do something for the community.

“Whatever little that we have, we want to share with them,” explains Debebe Dolebo, one of the spaza shop owners.

The food hamper contained basic groceries, including mealie meal, cooking oil, rice and sugar.

The group says they hope to reach 140 families.

“This is our commitment to the people of Kwa-Thema.

“To show them that we also care about this community.

“We are in this together.

“We will only beat this Covid-19 if we stand together,” adds Iyasu Belayneh.

The group says it is grateful for the years that each of them have spent, owning a spaza shop in Kwa-Thema.

One of them has been running his business for more than 20 years and says he is happy here.

“People treat us well, they treat us as human beings,” says Solomon Ervalo.

The group consists mainly of entrepreneurs from Bangladesh and Ethiopia.
