Addie Staff in the kitchen: We have your pizza needs covered

Everyone loves a pizza but with all South Africa's fast food chains closed during the lockdown, why not make your own?

STEP 1: Collect the ingredients for the base.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 Cup of water.
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil.
  • 2 Cups bread flour.
  • 1/4 Teaspoon salt.
  • 2 Cloves of garlic minced.
  • 1 Teaspoon dried basil.
  • 1 Teaspoon oregano.
  • 1 Teaspoon bread machine yeast.

Directions

STEP 2: Add all the ingredients, in the order in which they are listed above, to the pan of a bread machine. Select the dough cycle and leave the machine to do the hard work of making the dough for you.
Step 3: Once the dough cycle has finished, take the dough out of the bread machine and put it on a floured surface.
STEP 4: Roll to the desired thickness and, using a side plate,  cut out your pizza bases. This recipe make four thin bases for individual pizza or two large family-size bases. Make more dough if you need more pizzas or a thicker base.
STEP 5: Cover your bases with your choice of sauce. I used a tomato relish for these pizzas. Add your favourite toppings (see some suggestions below) and  finish with cheese before baking at 230 degrees celcius (on a thermofan setting) for 9 minutes or 15 minutes if you do not have a thermofan.
STEP 6: When done, remove from the oven and enjoy. Be careful not to burn yourself on the hot cheese.

Topping suggestions

Not sure what to put on your pizza?

Here are some ideas.

The Hawaiian is a true classic and very popular with people of all ages. Throw on some relish, ham, pineapple and cheese.
My personal favourite: relish, ham or salami, rosa tomotoes, fresh basil and avo. Don’t forget the cheese.
Relish, chorizo and caramelised onions. You may need to pre-cook some of your ingredients as they will not cook in the brief period it takes to bake these pizzas.
Relish, chorizo (pre-cooked), olives and fresh basil.
