Try this delicious twist on a classic apple tart. Everything tastes better with caramel.
For the apple lovers, for the tart lovers and for lovers of all things sweet, this is for you!
STEP 1: Gather all your ingredients.
Ingredients (Sponsored by Pick n Pay Strubenvale):
For the tart:
• 2 tablespoons melted butter.
• 1 cup brown sugar.
• 2 eggs.
• Pinch of salt.
• 1 cup self-raiding flour.
• 60ml milk.
• 1 tin (385g) apple pieces, or about 6 fresh apples.
For the sauce:
• 150g brown sugar.
• 1 tin evaporated milk (According to the recipe, only half a tin is required, but I found using a full tin makes the tart more moist and juicy.)
• 1 teaspoon (5ml) caramel essence.
Method:
STEP 2: Grease a 21cm x 21cm oven-safe dish and preheat the oven to 180°C.
STEP 3: Mix sugar, butter, salt and eggs together until smooth and creamy.
STEP 4: Add the self-raising flour and milk and use a whisk to mix well to make a smooth batter.
STEP 5: Pour the batter into the greased baking dish.
STEP 6: Spread the batter evenly across the dish and layer the apples on top.
STEP 7: Put into the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes until golden brown on top.
STEP 8: While waiting for the tart to finish, combine all the sauce ingredients in a pot on the stove and gently heat, while whisking regularly. Keep the sauce warm while the tart is baking.
STEP 9: Grab your tart from the oven when it is done. Using a knife, gently pull the sides of the tart away from the dish. This will also help the sauce soak in better.
STEP 10: While the tart and the sauce is still hot, pour the sauce over every inch of the tart.
STEP 11: Allow tart to soak up the delicious sweetness.
STEP 12: Dish up while warm and enjoy! Perfect for breakfast too! (Not really… just tastes really good the day after as well).
