Man wounded in hijacking in Everest

A woman and her son (2) escaped harm when they and her husband were hijacked on Saturday evening.

A couple from Everest Informal Settlement, who were travelling in a dark grey Mercedes-Benz 3 at around 6pm on Saturday evening were attacked by three men pretending to be policemen.

According to Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannas Ramphora, the complainant was sitting in the back seat while her husband drove and their two-year-old son sat in the front passenger seat.

The couple had just closed their shop and was driving down Main Street in Everest when a white Mercedes-Benz, approaching from the opposite direction, blocked their way.

Three unknown men approached them, all carrying firearms.

The suspects opened the couple’s vehicle doors, introduced themselves as policemen and pulled them out of the car.

The suspects took their son to the second Mercedes-Benz and instructed the couple to follow them.

“Her husband raised his hands up and refused to comply.

“While they were engaged in an argument, the complainant saw a chance to run back to their spaza shop.

“While she was running away, she heard about three shots being fired,” says Ramphora.

He says after the woman reached the shop, her brother came to the shop with her son and told her that her husband had been shot and the suspects had driven away with the couple’s car. The complainant was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Neither the woman nor the child was injured and the police are investigating a case of attempted murder and one of hijacking.
