The MMC said the team is satisfied with the measures taken by Unilever to protect the health and well-being of its workforce and mitigating the spread of the virus among employees.

The Unilever factory in Boksburg had to shut down after 34 of its employees contracted coronavirus.

According to the MMC for Community Safety Frans Mmoko his team received complaints from people claiming that the factory had workers who tested positive for Covid-19, but management was ignoring the health and safety precautions.

The team, led by the MMC, then descended on the factory yesterday (April 19) to investigate the claims.

According to Mmoko, when they arrived at the site, management at the factory confirmed that they had tested about 160 workers and 34 of the results came back positive.

“We were told that the factory was shut down the Thursday before Good Friday (April 10) and it remains closed. The managers took us inside the factory and of course we found that there was no operation taking place,” said Mmoko.
