Man dies at Gold One Modder East Operations

Since the lockdown began, mines had significantly scaled down their operations, particularly deep-level mining, as revealed by DMRE Minister Gwede Mantashe last Friday.

An employee at the Gold One Modder East Operations died on Friday.

The cause of death, or whether the man was above or below the surface of the mine, has not yet been revealed.

Ayanda Shezi, spokesperson for the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) says the department is aware of the accident and is investigating it in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act.

“It would be premature to speculate on causes at this stage,” says Shezi.

Since the lockdown began, mines had significantly scaled down their operations, particularly deep-level mining, as revealed by DMRE Minister Gwede Mantashe last Friday.

“Essential services supporting the sector – including security and related infrastructure, maintenance, water pumping and ventilation, must continue.

“Production of gold, chrome, manganese, iron ore and other sectors will operate at scaled down levels, to allow smelters which cannot be switched on and off abruptly, to remain operational,” says Mantashe.

Gold One Modder East Operations had not responded at the time of publication.
