Be on the lookout for cable thieves

The City asks residents to be extra watchful and vigilant and report any signs of criminal activity.

The City of Ekurhuleni has urged residents to report cable theft during the lockdown.

Although there hasn’t been a marked increase in cases of cable theft, the City feels that the lockdown may embolden some opportunistic criminals, especially during times of power outages.

The City asks residents to be extra watchful and vigilant and report any signs of criminal activity.

Their motto is: “Don’t ignore it. Report it!”

If you have been a victim of cable theft, call the Electricity Call Centre on 086 543 000 or email call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za for assistance.

Meanwhile, make sure to look out for the following:

• Criminals posing as contractors working for Ekurhuleni Electricity, removing cables illegally.

• A substantial amount of theft takes place late at night or very early in the morning so if you see “contractors” removing cables at these odd times, regard it as suspicious.

• Individuals walking around with cutting tools.

• Suspicious vehicles like bakkies, trucks and minibuses with occupants pretending to conduct electrical work.
