Covid-19 Lockdown: Mayor calls for calm after officers arrested for allegedly killing civilian

The suspects were scheduled to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on March 31.

Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina posted a tweet on Sunday calling for calm after an Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officer and a security officer were accused of killing a man and injuring children in Vosloorus.

“We call for calm following the fatal shooting of a civilian in Vosloorus. The police officer has been arrested and both the SAPS and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) are investigating the matter. I will be visiting the family of the deceased and injured in hospital after my office has made contact,” said the mayor on his Twitter account.

When asked for more details on the matter, the metro spokesperson, acting chief Supt Kobeli Mokheseng, declined to give more information saying the case in question is handled by IPID, adding that and they requested that any enquiry be directed to them or SAPS.

This publication is still awaiting response from IPID and the SAPS.

However, the Citizen reported that the man was killed at his home in Vosloorus on Sunday, and IPID spokesperson Sontaga Seisa confirmed that IPID was investigating the case.

According to the media report, EMPD officers were patrolling the area enforcing the Covid-19 lockdown regulations when they noticed people drinking liquor in a tavern.

It is alleged that officers tried to effect an arrest and were attacked by some community members. In retaliation, the officers then discharged rubber bullets before the man was allegedly followed to his home where he was fatally shot.

It was further reported that minors aged five, six and 11 were also injured during the incident, and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
