Metro to spend thousands to replace missing solar panels

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says it would cost approximately R195 000 to replace the panels and fix the cabling.

The metro has confirmed solar panels on the roof of the Spring Civic Centre were stolen.

This comes after The Addie questioned the metro about where the solar panels were.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says it would cost approximately R195 000 to replace the panels and fix the cabling.

“We will use our service provider, Lamo Corp (Pty) Ltd T/A Lamo Solar, who was recently appointed for operation and maintenance of solar PV plants across the metro.”

Gadebe did not clarify if the metro’s insurance would cover the cost of the work or if it would come out of the metro’s budget.

Gadebe went on to say the theft was reported to police, EMPD management and Mafoko Security Management.

He went on to say they don’t know how the suspects got access to the roof.

When asked what measures the metro had taken to prevent the theft from reoccurring, Gadebe says some of the seven entrances at the centre were closed permanently.

“More security are patrolling the premises because it is too big for only two guards to patrol.

“Trees and garden are also kept clean for visibility and more spotlights were installed on the premises.”
