Car guards clean up shopping centre car park

The guards say they have been losing customers because of how filthy the area is.

The car guards at Palm Springs Shopping Centre cleaned up the car park after it became impossible to work in.

The guards say the parking lot is split into two, with one half under centre management and the other under the municipality management.

“Nobody wants to take responsibility for this area.

“The municipality says it doesn’t fall under their jurisdiction and won’t clean it, but when we ask the lady from the municipality for bags while she’s cleaning the main road, she refuses to give them to us.

“We work here every day and it looks and smells awful,” says Nkosinathi Shabangu.

Zeph Sukazi had similar thoughts and says he’s been working at the car park for 25 years and those in charge don’t want to maintain the area.

“We’re willing to do this every two weeks, we just need somebody to help supply us with brooms and plastic bags,” says Sukazi.

The guards say they have been losing customers because of how filthy the area is.

“We’re losing 100 customers a day because they don’t want to bring their cars to be washed in a dirty place.

“If customers don’t come, then our daily bread is gone.

“Some of us are single parents and we depend on this job to support our children,” says Gladstone Ndlangamandla.

Additionally, it is not just the car guards who were affected by the state of the car park.

Dibuseng Monare, who works at a Multichoice DStv agency near the area, says the stink coming from the car park was enough to have their customers complaining too.

“We can’t even open our windows when it’s hot because the smell wafts in,” says Monare.

The guards say they would like some support to help them preserve their jobs.
