WATCH: One dead in fight over money in Kempton CBD

The two men involved in the brawl were related

A man has died in hospital after a fight about money broke out in the Kempton Park central business district on Monday.

A video taken by by-standers at the scene had since gone viral.

The two men, who are related, got involved in the fight in front of shops on the corner of Long and Casuarina streets around 6pm.

Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, said Kempton Park detectives were investigating a case of murder and a 30-year-old suspect was arrested on the scene.

He said crime prevention members were doing patrols in the area when they came across the fight.

“They stopped and tried to intervene. It is alleged one suspect hurled a brick which hit the victim on his head. He was taken to Arwyp. The suspect was arrested on the spot,” Mtshali said.

“Later on Tuesday at about 3pm the hospital informed us the victim had succumbed to his injuries and the attempted murder charge was changed to murder.”

A witness, who requested to remain anonymous, later told Kempton Express that the circumstances which led to the death of the man was because of money being owed.

“I’m hurt and shocked about what happened. My body is still shaking from the trauma. The two guys who were fighting are related,” he said on Tuesday.

“What transpired in the street was because of a debt dispute. Instead of the two finding a peaceful solution to their disagreement, things took a bad turn. They confronted each other and it got physical.

“We tried to break up the fight with the help of police, but we didn’t succeed.”
