Down scaling is not early termination for Bakerton workers

The project is still ongoing till August 2020 with some of the local employees.

In an article titled Workers feel they have been lied to, published on December 11, contract workers in Bakerton were frustrated with their contracts allegedly being terminated earlier than stated.

In response to these allegations, divisional head of communication and media relations Nhlanhla Cebekhulu responded with the following statement.

“This contract is a limited term contract and not a permanent job and down scaling and or termination is allowed in the contract.

“The project is still ongoing till August 2020 with some of the local employees.”

When asked about the contractors’ payment, Cebekhulu says: “Payment is done for each day worked and such will apply when making payments.

“Holidays and construction break period will not be paid.”

He concluded by saying: “There is no early termination, it is down scaling since this is not a permanent job, but it depends on the work available on site and other constraints such as contractor’s operational budget and plans.”
