What to do when the lights go out on Christmas

With the country’s energy supplier in dire strain, load-shedding is bound to rear its ugly head at some point during the festive season.

The Christmas season is a time to spend with family and friends, and the last thing you need is for all the lights to go out.

However, if this should occur, it does not mean your day or night should be ruined.

Here are some tips to avoid load-shedding from ruining your holiday.

• If you are planning on doing a lot of cooking and do not own a gas stove, consider purchasing a small gas stove or power cookers and make sure to stock up on enough gas.

• Candles only offer so much illumination, and unless you are planning on telling ghost stories the whole night, consider purchasing portable lamps and ensure they are plugged in and charging throughout the day when you do have electricity.

These can also be used in turn to charge mobile devices if you find yourself running low in the middle of the night.

• Stock up on data on your phone if want to Netfilx with your loved ones.

• When television, Netflix or video games are not an option, the holiday could provide you and your family with some quality time spent together playing board games.

Board games like Cluedo, Monopoly, Risk or even an old-fashioned puzzle can provide hours of fun.
