CIT robbery on Springs Road West

Approximately 10 suspects bombed and robbed a CIT truck in Springs on Friday evening.

Police responded to a cash-in-transit heist (CIT) on Springs West Road, at the corner Proton Road, on the border of Brakpan at approximately 5.10pm on Friday evening.

According to SAPS national spokesperson Col Brenda Muridili, more than 10 suspects in four vehicles attacked and bombed a cash truck.

According to CPsF chairman Barend van Heerden, the CIT perpetrators rammed the side of the CIT truck and instructed the men – the driver, crewman and a third man – in the cash vehicle to exit the truck and took the crewman’s weapon.

They then detonated three explosives to access and take the cash in the truck.

Muridili says the three security guards in the truck sustained minor injuries due to these explosions.

Van Heerden says the perpetrators abandoned their Toyota Cressida, which was on fire, on scene when they made their getaway.

They left the scene and shot a Car Track staff member, in the upper chest, approximately 300m from the scene near the corner of Springs West and Ergo roads.

He adds the man was hit twice more and had to be airlifted to the Union Hospital in Alberton where he is expected to make a full recovery, according to information van Heerden received from the hospital on Saturday morning.

The getaway vehicles included a white Ford Ranger and a VW Golf.

A member of the HAMNET was also shot when he drove onto the scene.

He is in hospital and will be operated on to remove shrapnel from his lower back.

When the Advertiser spoke to him on Saturday morning he said he couldn’t give any details of what had happened.

Van Heerden says the CPsF were on scene for a number of hours after the attack gathering and identifying evidence, including 7.62x54R shell casings which he says are used in LMG machine guns.

On the left is the shell casing of an AK47 (7.62×39) compared to the larger 7.62x54R shells found on the scene.

Muridili says that after the robbery the community looted the truck.

“The act of the community looting the cash at the crime scene tampers with the preservation of the crime scene.

“Those who witness the incident should refrain from stealing the scattered notes as that constitutes a criminal offense.

“Valuable evidence has been lost at the crime scene.”

The Addie has a copy of a video which shows the community looting the scene which Muridili has requested we not publish as the SAPS discourage looting.

No arrests have been made and the suspects escaped in three vehicles with an undisclosed amount of money.
