Women encouraged to speak out at hospital: 16 Days of Activism at Far East Rand

"If they are too afraid to go the the police, they can go to a social worker for counselling."

Social workers and members from Siyabonga Africa and Bethesda House went to the Far East Rand Hospital on Thursday to raise awareness of abuse against women and children.

They handed out pamphlets encouraging women to seek help and speak out, and they also screened some of the women at the hospital for signs of abuse.

Ntebatge Ntabane of Siyabonga Africa says: “Women mustn’t keep quiet, they must always report abuse when they see it.

“If they are too afraid to go the the police, they can go to a social worker for counselling.”

As for the community, Mokoena says: “People must not protect the abusers, the communities should stand together and reveal who the abusers are.

“Too many men are getting away with this and it is not acceptable.”
