The Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EGCCI) held its 17th annual President’s Awards Banquet on Thursday evening at Carnival City.
The awards highlight and honour businesses in Springs, Nigel and Brakpan for their contribution to the local community.
There were five categories which businesses were awarded for.
These were employment creation, enterprise development, skills development, social and economic development and environment.

Businesses across the spectrum were awarded and these included corporates (more than 200 employees), medium-size businesses (50-200 employees) and small businesses (1-50 employees).
There was a jovial mood in the air and guests mingled and enjoyed the entertainment from Vodi and Kontsantin Georgiev, who sang familiar hits, such as Just The Two Of Us, How Deep Is Your Love and Smooth Operator.
Implala Platinum Refineries were given an award for their various activities in the environment, sports development and corporate social investment sectors.
John Crane was also honoured for its corporate social investment work, where they built two hostels in Kwasa School.
Liebherr Africa, McCain Foods, Bayer South Africa, Carnival City and Sibanye Still Water were also honoured for their work.

In the medium business category, Ace Auto Scrapyard and Reynolds Travel Centre received their awards from EGCCI president Mike du Toit.
Five special individuals were also recognised for their contribution to society.
Seventeen-year-old Bongani Mtshladi received an award for his act of bravery when he rescued an woman from a burning shack in Never Never informal settlement in July.
Mtshladi says he acted on instinct when he pulled the woman out and just wanted to save a life.
For social upliftment of the community, Maria Masuku was praised for her dedication to the poor who she feeds daily at her soup kitchen.

Bishop Andile Madiba also feeds the hungry and helps drug addicts beat the nyaope addiction in Tsakane.
The bishop also gives motivational talks.
In the sports achievement category, Danielle Chapman was applauded for her brilliance in tennis.
Chapman represented team South Africa national junior squad in the USA in August, where she finished second.
From there, Chapman went to Morocco to play in the Africa Championships where her team finished fourth.
She has also been selected for the Tennis South Africa national junior squad for 2020.

Phillip de Jager was also honoured for his tireless commitment to the environment.
De Jager, who is also the longest-serving executive committee member of the Springs Chamber, is passionate about conservation and not only seeks to pass on his love and appreciation of the environment to future generations, but also fights against the numerous mining applications that have been launched in the area over the past two years.
