Rotary Jail&Bail good fun at Springs Mall

The fund-raiser saw local business people and influential personalities ‘arrested’ for a good cause.

On Friday, the Rotary Club of Springs Park hosted a Jail&Bail at Springs Mall.

The fund-raiser saw local business people and influential personalities ‘arrested’ for a good cause.

Des Pratley, head of fund-raising, says some of them put up quite a fight when they were apprehended.

Diane Freeman, Dermont Connors, Klaus Friebe and Johan Nickols planning a few ways on how to break out of jail on Friday.

“These are people who often donate to the club.

“They are always willing to help us raise more money, even if it means sitting in a cage for a few hours,” she explains.

Passers-by could donate money either as bail for the accused or to keep them jailed.

Among those imprisoned was Diane Freeman, principal of Springs Boys’ High School.

And in their efforts to raise money for her bail, the school asked learners to donate and wear civvies in return.

The learners were able to contribute R3 733 to their principal’s bail.

Veritas College staff, learners and parents also came together to bail Dermont Connors out.

“The children know they need to come help their principal get out of jail.

“I know we will get him out soon,” says Dr David Payaniandi, the school’s marketing manager.

Many learners and their parents came through to make their donation.

Johan Nickols of the Council for Pastoral and Spiritual Counsellors (CPSC) took a more creative root of raising bail money.

He took a few personal items to the Cash Converters at the mall, hoping to make more than a few bucks.

“I am happy to be arrested for charity,” he said.

“This is something we have not done for a while.

“It is an exciting way to make money and encourages public participation,” explains Lisa Davis, the clubs president.

The club managed to raise R24 000 on the day.

All proceeds go to the various programmes hosted by the Rotary Club of Springs Park.
