Coding: Gaining skills for life

Rotarian Cheryl Havenga delivered a powerful speech on how a person can go about living a remarkable life.

The Springs Rotary Club, along with Hope, Faith and Grace, gathered at Expert Projects and Training Solutions (EPTS) on Eight Street on Saturday.
Hope, Faith and Grace teamed up with Codejinka to provide IT and coding lessons to keen high school learners.
EPTS offers courses in mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as a variety of computer courses.
High school learners can enrol in the courses while they finish their schooling.

Learners from across Springs listened eagerly to Rotarian Cheryl Havanga and Pastor Johan Groenewald who gave inspiring speeches and bits of important life advice before a coding lesson.
Groenewald spoke about the importance of having technical skills in South Africa, where unemployment is high, and how skilled people are more in demand than ever before.
He emphasised the importance of possessing basic computer skills regardless of what profession one chooses to go in.
Havenga delivered a powerful speech on how a person can go about living a remarkable life.
She spoke around the theme of coding and explained: “Your parents and their parents before them, were all coding.

“They are coding you and they coded their children by instilling values and to get you into the habit of getting up in the morning and making the most of your day.”
She added: “You can create a good destiny if you have integrity, show kindness to others and plan your day so that you make the most of it.
“It’s always the things in life that you didn’t do, the opportunities you didn’t take that you end up regretting most.”
The Springs Rotary club donated four computers to EPTS who in turn provided them with space where they offered the children free coding lessons.
