Mariri sentenced to life for Selcourt attack

Mariri, who is no stranger to prison, was released on parole in 2016 for another crime and was arrested in Pretoria in 2018 for the Selcourt crime.

The Springs Regional Court sentenced Caiphus Mariri to life imprisonment last Friday.

Mariri was convicted of crimes he committed in September 2012 at the Selcourt enclosure.

Mariri, with two other suspects who were armed with a firearm and knives, got into the house in Selcourt and found three family friends sleeping.

During the house robbery and theft, the suspects also raped one of the victims and stole a car that was on the premises.

The police are still looking for his two accomplices.

Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora says they are happy with the sentence.

“We hope it will serve as a deterrence to those who want to commit crime.

“We would also like to thank the investigating officer, Det Serg Zenzile Murudi of the trio task team, for her hard work,” says Ramphora.
