Shoot-out between EMPD and suspects in Daggafontein

“There were no visible injuries to the EMPD officers following the exchange of gun fire,” says Kobeli Mokheseng, the EMPD's media liaison officer.

EMPD Public Order Policing (POP) Unit members patrolling the N17 freeway stopped a suspicious-looking white Toyota Fortuner traveling east-bound along Daggafontein on Monday morning with the intention of searching the six male occupants.

The male driver, in his mid-40s, who claimed to be a teacher and the liable owner, alighted the vehicle and the officers requested to see his driver’s licence.

As he was explaining to the officers that he left his documents at home, three male occupants exited the vehicle and started shooting at the officers, as they ran towards a nearby informal settlement. While they were exiting the vehicle a 9mm CZ firearm with serial numbers tampered with and 15 live rounds fell from one of the suspects.

An undisclosed amount of money was found in a sports bag inside the suspects’ vehicle.

The POP Unit retaliated, where three male suspects between the ages of 35 and 40 were incapacitated. Police uncovered a sports bag full of an undisclosed amount of money inside the vehicle.

“It is not clear at this stage why they were traveling with such a large amount of cash, but we suspect it was illegally obtained.
