Wandering cattle due to careless herders, says metro

"Another problem is that the fences in the fields are being stolen by criminals and the cattle walk wherever they want.”

In response to the ongoing problem of cattle crossing the Tonk Meter N17 on/off-ramp and the accidents it has caused, metro media liaison officer Lerato Monyane gave the following response:

When asked who the owner of the cattle was, Monyane says: “The owner of the cattle lives in KwaZulu-Natal and comes to Gauteng very often.

“The cattle are being kept in KwaThema.

“The herder says his name is John and that he is mostly out of Gauteng.”

She adds: “These herders are careless and don’t have proper control over their cattle.

“EMPD members did speak to the herder to inform him about the danger the cattle pose.

“In many instances, we have witnessed both cattle and goats roaming without any herder.”

When asked why the problem has been allowed to persist, Monyane says: “This is a probmlem that has been going on for a very long time.

“The other reason is that we don’t have a place to keep them if impounded.

“SPCA says it is not their duty and the EMPD must do the necessary.
