Hyacinths on Alexander Dam

“You have to close the windows of your house; the smell is just terrible.”

Residents in Dersley are frustrated over the state of Alexander Dam and seek answers from the metro.

Resident Belinda Roos says: “The hyacinths kill all the fish in the water and then we can smell the rot when the wind comes up.

This issue is not new, as Murray Park has been facing a hyacinth issue since 2013.

This infestation is plaguing dams all over Springs, including President’s Dam and a large part to the Blesbkspruit.

She adds: “Contractors were sent here by the metro on a R7-million contract to remove the hyacinths, but they did absolutely nothing and the problem has just gotten worse.”

The metro failed to respond to our inquiries at time of going to publication.
