Petersfield residents left in the dark by metro

“This then leaves us with a huge question of what are we paying for,” says van der Merwe, whose association represents 621 households in the area.

Residents in Petersfield have been left frustrated and angry by the metro’s lack of response to their complaints regarding the lack of working street lights and basic services to their area.

The Petersfield Residents Association says they have been reporting the faulty street lights since 2017, but nothing has happened.

“After numerous attempts by ward Clr Dean Stone, as well as the community, nothing is being done to resolve our queries,” says Patsy van der Merwe, secretary of the Petersfield Residents Association.

Residents say the the whole of Vaal Drive, right from the entrance down to the corner of Krokodil Street, is in complete darkness.

“We, as the community of Petersfield Extension, would like to know why the lights are not being repaired?

“We are already performing basic services, like cleaning our own pavements, cutting the grass at the entrances and all along the sidewalks, ouselves.

“Our refuse sometimes sits on pavements for weeks due to refuse removal not being done.

“This then leaves us with a huge question of what are we paying for,” says van der Merwe, whose association represents 621 households in the area.

Additionally, van der Merwe says the metro has ignored their reports about an open electricity box on Kei Circle, which has been open for months.

The box is big enough for a small child to climb in.

Residents say not only is this dangerous, but also leaves them vulnerable to cable theft.

At the time if going to print, the metro had not responded to our questions.
