An artistic celebration of all things local

The competition was launched on June 1 and the deadline for entries is August 31.

What is it that inspires you about your local surroundings? Is it the vibrant city streets, the beauty of the local park or the diversity of the people of your town?

Apply that Local Inspiration to the medium that you are creating in and make it a masterpiece. The Fontes Artem Art Competition is a celebration of the arts, as well as an effort to encourage the growth of artistic expression in the youth of the Springs area and immediate surrounds.

The purpose of the competition is to encourage the development of art within our schools and community and to raise awareness for the Art4Life project, which focuses on the importance of art and expression as a means of therapy and release for children suffering from abuse or illness.

Focusing on all mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media, the Fontes Artem Art Competition enlivens learners of primary and high school level to embrace their creativity and express themselves through art.

The theme is Local Inspiration and the entrants are expected to demonstrate what it is about the local surroundings that inspire them.

Ten finalists will be selected from each category and their artwork will be placed in a special exhibition open to the public. This is where the final judging process will take place.

Winners will be announced at a special prize-giving evening, where the winners in each category will take home awards, a cash prize and art hampers.

The school with the most entries stands a chance to win a cash prize.

There are five categories – drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media and green – in which you can enter, and the cost per item is R50.

Artwork will be judged based on the following aspects of artistic expression:
