Community shocked by murder of 19-year-old

The suspect was arrested on Plantation Road last Friday afternoon, says Springs police spokesperson Amanda Greybe.

The 18-year-old suspect wanted for the murder of a 19-year-old girl in Rhodes Street last Wednesday morning is now in police custody.

The suspect was arrested on Plantation Road last Friday afternoon, says Springs police spokesperson Amanda Greybe.

It is alleged the victim was in the kitchen cooking when she was attacked by the suspect.

“All the victim’s boyfriend, who was in the bathroom at the time of the murder, heard was a woman screaming and when he went to investigate he allegedly saw the suspect stabbing the victim.

“The suspect ran away immediately after he committed the crime, but it is alleged he later came back to the house and stole a few items,” says Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora.

Ramphora confirmed that the suspect and the victim were related.

Police say it is unclear how he gained entry to the house and still need to confirm with his parents if he was using drugs.

Speaking after the arrest, Greybe said it was a team effort to find and arrest the 18-year-old.

Provincial inspector Lucky Nkosi, inspector Vhongani Nkwashu and inspector Miliswa Shawe arrested the suspect.

“Springs SAPS wants to thank all departments that worked non-stop to find the suspect, especially the members of the community who gave the tip-off.

“They are our eyes and ears and it proves once again that we all can make a difference by working together in the fight against crime,” says Greybe.
