Geduld Methodist Church reaches out to community

The Geduld Methodist Church held their weekly soup kitchen last Thursday at 2pm.

The church has been holding the soup kitchen for the past 10 years, and this year they have gone mobile.

The mobile soup kitchen boasts a fully operational kitchen where the soup is prepared.

Kind volunteers from the church and Springs help to prepare and handout the soup.

Pastor Jonathan Coates says: “This is not just a church initiative, but a community effort to help those less fortunate.”

The soup kitchen feeds up to 80 people a day and Diesel Electric provides the majority of the ingredients needed to prepare the soup.

According to Coates: “Felicity Links and Paulina Jansen start cooking first thing in the morning so the soup can be served fresh and hot.”

Most residents who come to the kitchen are homeless or don’t have enough money to see them through the month.

“Many residents in the area have lost their jobs and often entire families are in need, including the children.

“We are just trying to do our part for the community; Geduld is a very poor area,” says Coates.

Ward Clr Thulani Simelane says: “The soup kitchen shows that if the community comes together, they can really make a difference in people’s lives.”

The mobile soup kitchen also hands out soup in the park opposite Pinegrove Primary School on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Coates wishes to extend his gratitude to all those involved and encourages community members to lend a hand, especially during the winter.
