Pollak Park sewage leak a problem for years

The leak could be the reason behind the persistent sewage problems in Pollak Park which at times has caused sewage to flow into people's yards.

A chase through the bushes behind the N17 Hospital and Pollak Park Golf Club led to a very stinky discovery by Springs CPF chairperson Barend van Heerden two weeks ago.

The chairperson says he, alongside other community sub-policing forums, came upon the sewage leak by accident and says due to the size of the leak, it is clear it has been happening for years.

“This is a serious environmental pollution incident that will have devastating consequences for the environment in Springs and the Blesbokspruit,” says van Heerden.

When the Addie went to the scene, we could not find the starting point of the leak as it was so big and the ground around the leak was unstable.

The leak, which smells horrible, had created a dam of its own and the two drains next to the leak were overflowing and bubbling with sewage.

Ward councillors Shadow Shabangu and Thulani Simelane were dismayed by what they saw.

“This is the first time I’ve been here and it is clear it has been going on for a while.

“It’s not healthy for the residents and animals that graze around this area and it’s harmful to the environment.

“I have reported it to the metro and will follow up on it until it is resolved,” says Shabangu.

The leak could be the reason behind the persistent sewage problems in Pollak Park which at times has caused sewage to flow into people’s yards.

At present, the metro is fixing the sewage pipe that has collapsed in the veld next to Arno Street but it is unclear at present if the two are linked.

The Addie will follow up on the issue as more information becomes available.

The metro did not respond in time for publication.
