Travelling in a skedonk (old battered car) still not ayoba

A frustrated Springs taxi commuter came to the Addie with a complaint that the taxis in Springs are not safe or roadworthy, they are cold and have a bad smell.

The commuter says: “Whenever a taxi gets old, they bring it to our side for it to transport commuters from Welgedacht, Payneville, Bakerton and Slovo Park.

“I know two people whose phones fell on the road while they were in a taxi, and all taxi drivers could say is that they are sorry.”

The commuter claims that some drivers don’t have drivers’ licences, and that most taxis are not permitted to be on the road.

Springs Taxi Association (STA) chairperson Leornard Molo says: “I cannot comment on the licence issue as that would lie with taxi owners as they hire the drivers.

“However, we do check if taxis have a permit from the transportation board before we register them with the association.

“The transportation board doesn’t usually give taxis a permit if they are not roadworthy.

“All the taxis registered with the STA have road permits.”

“These taxis don’t even have heaters and since it’s winter we get cold while travelling which leads us to getting different sicknesses,” says a commuter.
