The tools the suspect attempted to steal included various power tools, a ladder and a toolbox.

According to van Heerden, the suspect also had two knives and marijuana in his possession.

Van Heerden phoned the Springs police twice, but by 1.11pm, they had still not arrived on the scene.

The Addie was unable to receive comment from police spokespersons, Capt Johannes Ramphora or Amanda Greyber, as both are on leave.

When contacted telephonically, however, Greyber told the Addie to phone the police station.

When two officers arrived at the Addie officers, they said they could not provide comment, saying that only Ramphora has the authority to do so.
