By the time the neighbourhood watch arrived, the suspect were gone.

An 82-year-old man was killed last night in Welgedacht Smallholdings during an apparent robbery.

The victim and his wife were in the house at about 7.15pm when the victim got up to fetch a beer from the kitchen.

As he was pouring the beer, his wife heard a bang and saw the victim stagger and then collapse.

She then saw one suspect armed with a firearm climbing in through the window.

She threatened the suspect with a knife and managed to escape through the lounge door into the garden.

Once there, she ran towards the fence and hid.
