On the corner of Ebony and Sapele roads in Bakerton there lies a large heap of rubbish where residents have been dumping their refuse.

Ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin says: “The municipality seldom collects the waste on the allocated days and that is one of the reasons residents dump waste at any empty plot in Bakerton.

“Unfortunately, sometimes the waste truck arrives a week late.

“This is not an acceptable practice.

“Illegal dumping is also not acceptable.

“We need to consider the people living near those illegal dumping sites.

“The filth breeds rats, which invade nearby houses.

“The stink is unbearable.

“I don’t have any idea when the waste issue will be resolved.

“In the meantime, if the residents of Payneville and Bakerton have excess waste, for whatever reason, please use the municipal dumping sites in Welgedacht.

“It is in our own interest to keep our residential areas clean and tidy.

“I have made a list of all the illegal dumping in Bakerton and forwarded it to the waste department for collection.”

An inquiry has been sent to the metro.
