Open substation in Vorster Street a cause for concern.

Ward councillor Dean Stone said that an open substation “is unacceptable, there are children playing in this street and it is very dangerous.”

A substation in Vorster Street, East Geduld has an unlocked door which allows anyone to open the door and access the substation and this poses a great danger to the community.

The main door’s locking mechanism is broken and cannot be locked from the outside.

Dion Greyling, who lives in Vorster Street, stated that he has seen people tampering with the substation on March 18.

“People come along with prongs and tamper with the equipment inside, and the municipality has done nothing about this.”

Greyling lodged a complaint to the metro but failed to get a response.

Children could be seen playing in the street near the substation.

According to Greyling, the substation has a self-locking electrical system that was supposed to be installed with the substation and that that part is missing, thus leaving the door unlocked.

“Anyone can just come and open this door and there’s a lot of voltage running through this substation; it has to power this whole area.

“An open substation is unacceptable. There are children playing in this street and it is very dangerous,” said ward councillor Dean Stone.

“You can hear the substation buzzing with all the voltage that runs through it,” said Stone on March 22.

Greyling said it looks like a contract that was not completed and that the metro will have to send someone to complete the contract.

The metro has failed to respond at the time of publication.
