Applications for special votes to open soon, says IEC

The applications for a special vote will only be accepted from April 4-18.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has released the dates for special votes.

The first type of special votes is home visits, for those who are unable to get to a voting station, including the elderly or people living with disabilities.

This will take place on May 6 and you need to be correctly registered for the IEC to allow you to vote at your home.

To vote from home, one needs to book online.

This is normally done in the morning and a member from the voting station will contact you to arrange a time.

The second is for voters who will be away on voting day.

book online, download the form, print it out, fill it out and take the original to the correct IEC office before closing of business on April 18.

Applications for a special vote will only be accepted from April 4-18.

To apply via SMS between April 4-18 (not recommended for home visits) send your identification number to 32249.

There are no postal votes, if you are travelling and want to vote overseas, you can only do that on April 27 from 7am to 9pm at an SA Consulate or Mission.

For that, you will need to fill out a VEC10 form on the IEC website by March 13 and you will need your ID and passport.

Provincial votes can be cast anywhere in the province in which you are registered, for example, if you are registered to vote in Germiston, but work in Rosebank, you can vote at Rosebank Primary School and your provincial vote will count.

National votes can be cast anywhere in SA and it will count.
