The Springs SAPS is warning the public against a scam that involves stolen cars.

Spokesperson Amanda Greybe says the scammers contact victims and claim to be from the SAPS.

“They call people whose cars were stolen, telling them the cars have been found.

“They then ask for a sum of money to have the car transported to the rightful owners.”

Unsuspectingly, the victims then deposit the money into an account.

“The police will never ask you to deposit money, over the phone,” says Greybe.

She says when a car is found, the owner is usually called to identify it.

“Please be careful not to act out of excitement.”
