Breetzke left without wheels after accident with police van

Ramphora went on to say the police assess each claim against them on a case by case basis and if the police are found to be at fault, they do pay the injured party.

Driver William Fennant Breetzke has been left in a tight spot after an accident with a police van last July.

“I was driving on the road and the van had stopped and I was behind it.

“I suddenly reversed into my car and caused over R50 000 worth of damage,” says Breetzke.

He says a case was reported and was told by his investigating officer no charges would be laid against either driver and he was welcome to pursue a civil case against the police.

However, the Springs police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora, has a different version of the incident.

“The complainant was driving behind the police van when it was suddenly forced to make a dead stop.

“Because the complainant was following too closely to the van, he was unable to move out of the way fast enough, and rear-ended the police van,” says Ramphora.

Ramphora went on to say the police assess each claim against them on a case by case basis and if the police are found to be at fault, they do pay the injured party.

In the meantime, Breetzke has been left paying the costs of the incident and says it has hit his pockets hard as he drives an older model car whose parts are not readily available.
