Springs library closed… again

Damaged caused by heavy rains has resulted in the library being closed once again.

The metro has issued a statement notifying Springs residents that the library will be closed until further notice due to damage to the facility caused by the recent heavy rains.

The city’s officials from Real Estate and Disaster and Emergency Services departments are currently assessing the extent of the damage to determine a course of action.

“The library will be closed immediately as it is unsafe for the public and our staff.

“We need to drain the water from the library and dry the areas around the electrical appliances, furniture and books.

“As with any water damage, we will have to ensure the damage caused to the structure is addressed first and will then repair the ceilings and peeling paint.

“At this stage we are waiting for a full assessment of the damage,” says member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for community services Clr Dora Mlambo.

Residents will be updated on the progress of the work done and the opening of the library.

“The city apologizes for the inconvenience this has caused.”

This is at least the third time in just over two years that the library has had to be closed.

In November 2016 a burst pipe resulted in the library being closed for almost two months.

Last year the facility was closed in August, for the installation of new air-conditioning units, and did not reopen until October.

The Addie will keep our readers updated about the reopening of the library.
