An important part of keeping an afro is wash day. It’s called wash day because it will probably take you all day – but it’s totally worth it.

Here is a routine that is similar to Youtuber and Natural Hair coach Yolenda Jawe’s.

To begin, you should detangle your hair. Sometimes called “Pre-shampooing” the process entails sectioning your hair into eight sections and applying oils and conditioner. Almond oil and coconut oil are recommended. After applying the oils and conditioner to the sections, twist the hair into plaits. After twisting it cover the hair with a plastic bag for 30 minutes. This ensures that the hair is soft and easy to comb. It also removes any tangles in the hair.

After 30 minutes, rinse off the oils from your twisted and lather it with a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo. It is important to use a shampoo with no sulphates as those with strip your hair of its natural oils.

After rinsing the shampoo off, detangle the wet twists, applying conditioner to each detangled twist as you go. Comb the hair starting at the tips and carefully work your way to the root. After ensuring that all the hair is fully covered, cover it with a plastic bag for 45 minutes. The plastic bag traps heat, allowing the hair to absorb the conditioner.

After 45 minutes, rinse off the conditioner using cold water to seal your pores and lock in the moisture. Follow this by covering the wet hair in an old T-shirt and squeeze the excess water out.

After this, section your hair again and apply shea butter to it and style it as desired. Two strand twists are a quick and easy style, and you’re good to go.
