Flood tips for the rainy season from Ekurhuleni DEMS

According to a statement from Ekurhuleni DEMS, Gauteng is one of the provinces anticipated to experience heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms with possible localised flooding.

Springs – As the rainy season in the highveld starts, Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) asks residents to keep these tips in mind.

Ekurhuleni DEMS have released the following tips on how to handle flooding.

Those living in homes that are in informal and formal settlements susceptible to flooding need to be on high alert as roads, low-lying bridges, furrows, and water canals might be negatively affected by flash floods.

Residents are encouraged to avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water is above one’s ankles.

If trapped in a flooding situation while in a vehicle, it is preferable to abandon it and climb to higher ground.

Motorists are encouraged to not drive on roads where water is obscuring it because one cannot determine the depth of the water.

In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level.

Switch electricity at the supply point to the building off.

It is also dangerous to be around an illegal electrical connection.

Residents are advised to move any livestock to higher land before the storm as a precaution.

Listen to the radio or watch television to receive updates on the floods.

Crossing flood water using pipelines over streams is strongly discouraged.

In case of emergencies, residents are to call the DEMS direct line on 011 458 0911, cellphone on 112, or national emergency number on 10177.

These phone numbers should be saved and easy to access.
