Last Saturday, the metro presented its Urban Design Precinct Plan for the Springs CBD to the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce.

The Ekurhuleni Urban Design Initiative represents an important element of the new spatial vision of Ekurhuleni, one that is guided by the Theory of Change.

The city wishes to attract investment and renew confidence from residents through the plan.

The new city design is intended to guide and drive social, economic and spatial transformation in order to build a viable, compact, vibrant and sustainable region.

The city admits the plan’s roll-out completely depends on the availability of funding or external investment.

This means some parts of it may not become reality anytime soon.

Second and Third streets have been prioritised for upgrades.

They are said to be the two main roads that will provide investors with a clear picture of what Springs has to offer.

The trader shelters across the two taxi ranks will also be revamped.

The metro has observed that waste management is one of the key issues for the traders who use the shelters.

Pioneer Park is one of a few outdoor venues the city hopes to spice up in the next few years.

It has been prioritised for its capacity to bring the community together, and be a pathway to different corners of the CBD.

The metro invites the public to view the draft plan of the precinct on the Ekurhuleni website, www.ekurhuleni.gov.za (search ‘urban design’ or ‘Springs CBD’).

Comments can be submitted via email to urbandesign@ekurhuleni.gov.za, or via a comment box at the Springs Library or Springs City Planning Offices (4th floor, Springs Civic Centre).
