The Springs SAPS is warning parents to be vigilant in caring for their children during the school holidays.

The Springs SAPS is warning parents to be vigilant in caring for their children during the school holidays.

Capt Johannes Ramphora says the department is flooded with cases of young children going missing, and some of it can be avoided.

“It is important for parents to know where their children are at all times.

“Do not let hours go by without checking on them.”

Ramphora admits some of the cases are due to children walking about.

“Sometimes children visit their friends or relatives without letting their parents know.

“The parents then assume the children have gone missing.

“If your child comes homes with a friend, please notify the friend’s parents or report to the nearest police station.”

Ramphora says these incidences also cause duplication in their statistics.

“A missing child complaint is sometimes made at more than one police station.

“This is also not necessary.”

The department also warns stokvel members from carrying large amounts of cash, after they get payouts.

“We have had numerous reports of robberies over the past few weeks.

“One man was robbed of R50 000,” he adds.

He advises stokvel members to make use of electronic transfers from the banks.

“This is so much safer.

“We have seen it over and over again – people become targets when they carry a lot of money on them.”
