Gauteng East District Department of Education holds annual education support programmes awards

“Regardless of all our demands, you make it possible to create time and space for these learners to engage in the programmes of values, culture and sporting activities. “Thank you very much for that,” said Chabalala.

The Gauteng East District Department of Education held their annual education support programmes awards on Tuesday afternoon.

Schools from around the district gathered at the civic centre as learners and teachers were rewarded for their hard work during the year in extracurricular activities.

In her address to the attendees, the district director Somikazi Chabalala heaped praise on the staff at schools for their efforts in making sure the learners perform both in and out of the classroom.

“We push as a department that learners must be taught and we only talk about curriculum development. We forget that the involvement of learners in these sporting and cultural activities make the development of the learner holistic.

“Regardless of all our demands, you make it possible to create time and space for these learners to engage in the programmes of values, culture and sporting activities.

“Thank you very much for that,” said Chabalala.

Chabalala also emphasised the role sport could play in minimising the disciplinary challenges schools are facing in the classrooms as she believes learners deal with their emotions as they release that energy on the sports fields.

Learners and teachers from various schools showcased their award-winning work on stage, in the form of musical items, speech-giving and gymnastics displays.
