KwaThema – The City of Ekurhuleni celebrates the centenary of Margaret Gazo by laying wreaths at her tomb at KwaThema Old Cemetary.

Although October is celebrated widely across the country as Oliver Reginald (OR) Tambo Month, the metro has lined up an array of activities to pay homage to this patriot and stalwart.

In her opening remark, MC Lindiwe Lasindwa says she is grateful for the opportunity to honour the hero.

“We have come to say that her work and efforts in the struggle were never in vain.”

Mama Margaret Gazo, born in January 1918, was among the leaders and organisers of the famous 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings against the extension of pass laws for African women.

Mayor of Ekurhuleni Clr Mzwandile Masina laid the first wreath on the grave of Margaret Gazo last Thursday.

Reflecting on the commemoration, Ekurhuleni executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina says, “As the City, we are proud to have had the honour of providing the last resting home of our heroes OR Tambo and Margaret Gazo and to enjoy the fruits of their struggle.

“We are equally delighted and honoured to speak of the immense contribution of our leaders for whom we are celebrating their centenary this year, Mama Albertina Sisulu, Nelson Mandela and Margaret Gazo.”

The wreaths were laid at her grave by her family members, the mayor and representatives of the ANC Women’s League.

A public lecture was delivered in the evening at KwaThema Community Hall.

The centenary of Margaret Gazo was celebrated with a wreath laying at KwaThema Old Cemetery last Thursday.

A wreath will also be laid on OR Tambo’s gravesite in Wattville on October 27.

The OR Tambo wreath laying will be preceded by a theatre production at the Germiston Theatre depicting his life between October 19 and 31. School learners debate on October 20 at Alberton Civic Centre and choral music competition on October 21 at the Germiston City Hall.
