Prison warden killed during robbery on Welgedacht Road

In an attempt to get away, he was shot in the back of the head.

Nigel prison warden France Phasha was killed during a robbery on Welgedacht Road last Wednesday evening.

It is alleged two men pretended to ask for a lift to Springs.

When the deceased stopped, two other suspects appeared from the bushes, held him up at gunpoint and ordered him to vacate the vehicle.

In an attempt to get away, he was shot in the back of the head.

A manhunt has been launched by the SAPS for the four suspects.

The warden died on arrival at Life Springs Parkland Hospital.

Spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services: Gauteng Region Mocheta Monama says, “The official has 13 years of service in the Department of Correctional Services.

“The memorial service will be held on October 18 at Nigel Correctional Centre and the family is still to confirm the time.

“The department is saddened by the incident and we would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased.”

Members of the public are encouraged to come forth with any information which may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

The public is urged not to confront the suspects but to report their whereabouts to the nearest police station.

Springs police spokesperson Captain Johannes Ramphora says a case of murder has been opened.
